About us
We're Dani and Janno, together with our three daughters (10–16). Five years ago we visited Sweden for the first time – and fell in love with the country almost instantly. We've been back nearly every summer since, and somewhere along the way "maybe one day" turned into an actual plan to move here – as soon as possible.
All three girls play handball and would love to keep playing once we're in Sweden, so a club nearby matters to us as much as the view. Our dream is a house by a lake, with at least 2,000 m² of land around it – room for a garden, maybe a dock, and space to spare. Total peace and quiet is great, but we'd still like a "bigger" town within 15–20 minutes, for school, shopping and, well, handball practice. And just as important as any of that: a welcoming community – a place where newcomers with work-in-progress Swedish are given a fair chance to become part of village life, not just the Germans in the house by the lake.
So far we've only seen Sweden in summer – Malmö, Göteborg, Stockholm, Kalmar, Karlstad, Östersund, Umeå, Luleå, Abisko – and if there's a pattern, it's that we tend to like it more the further north we get. Höga Kusten has stolen our hearts. And yes, we know what you're thinking: "come back in November." Fair point – a winter trip is on the list before we sign anything. We're also working our way through Duolingo, so feel free to answer in Swedish.
Work-wise, Janno works in IT and can work fully remote. Dani currently works remote part of the time and on-site the rest, so she'd be looking for something new – we're not counting on finding jobs in the middle of nowhere.
We know that crowdsourcing a house-buying decision from Reddit is a slightly unconventional approach – normally you'd ask a realtor, not a bunch of strangers on the internet. But nobody knows a place better than the people who actually live there. Var i Sverige? means "Where in Sweden?" – and that's our question to you. Tell us a place and, if you like, why it matters to you: a quiet lake, good schools, a strong handball club, cheap land – whatever made you choose it.
